The Job Safety Skills Society (JSSS) is a not-for-profit organization conceived in 1991 and registered in Alberta in 1995. The JSSS is a partnership with educators, industry, government and the community created to address the unacceptable number of workplace injuries and fatalities among young workers. With the help of the JobSafe program, each year hundreds of students are properly educated in job safety before they enter the workforce.

Vision

Securing our Future: Leading youth toward safer, healthier and productive lives.

The JSSS researched and developed JobSafe, an extensive school-based safety education program designed to encourage and promote the development of a positive attitude toward safety. In 1995 Alberta Education approved the JobSafe courses as components of the Career and Technology Studies (CTS) program. The number of students enrolled in the program continues to grow, with more than 26,000 students certified in the JobSafe course. The instructor-lead and on-line courses consist of three parts, each requiring 25 hours of instruction and cover a broad spectrum of workplace safety. Upon completion of the courses students have a solid foundation in workplace safety knowledge.

The goal of the JSSS is to make JobSafe available in every junior and senior high school and ensure every high school student successfully completes one or more of the JobSafe courses before they graduate high school.

In 2006 there were 36,701 work-related injuries reported. Of these, 7,314 under the age of 25 were hurt badly enough to miss work beyond the day of the accident. In 2005, of the 124 workplace fatalities administered by the WCB, 4 were workers under age 25.

The mission of the JSSS is to address these alarming statistics and ensure all youth are properly prepared to be safe workers.
